Government’s newly launched accelerated road construction project dubbed, the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP), is expected employ some five thousand Ghanaian construction workers.
The initiative which is mainly funded by the District Assembly Common Fund, is expected to commence in earnest. It is meant to patch up and smoothen deplorable roads across the country.
The project will also facilitate the completion of various road projects across the country.
DRIP will also benefit farmers in rural communities who lack agricultural equipment, improving their farming activities.
Speaking at the launch, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo touted his administration’s achievements in improving road infrastructure in the country. Saying the DRIP project is a testament to his administration’s commitment to this.
“I stand before you today with considerable pride to launch the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) and commission essential equipment which use will be crucial in transforming road networks across the country.
Under DRIP, funded through the District Assembly Common Fund and supported by donor partners, MMDAs will receive essential equipment such as Caterpillars, Bulldozers, and Concrete Mixers.
These resources are intended to bolster road construction efforts and address longstanding infrastructure challenges across Ghana.
The initiative aims to expedite the completion of road projects and enhance agricultural activities in farming communities by facilitating better access to markets and reducing transportation costs.
Improved rural road networks are expected to mitigate post-harvest losses for farmers, contributing to economic stability and food security.
Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, underlined DRIP’s transformative impact.
“The District Road Improvement Programme is a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing road infrastructure in rural areas,” Mr Korsah stated.“The programme will foster sustainable development, improve connectivity, and elevate living standards by equipping local authorities with necessary tools and resources,” he stressed.
Administrator of the Distrct Assemblies Common Fund, Irene Naa Torshie Addo Later on her part, assured that measures have been put in place to ensure equipment shared under the DRIP programme will not be used for galamsey activities.
According to her, her outfit has put trackers and other gadgets in the Caterpillars, Bulldozers, and Concrete Mixers to ensure they are used for its intended purposes.
